Sound tips (CAPITALS = emphasis)

Say the CAPITAL part a little more strongly. Hyphens split a word into small parts; keep them joined as you speak.

  • ch (ich / nicht): Hold your tongue as if saying “ee”, then gently blow air instead of using your voice. Keep it soft; it is not “k” or “sh”. For the “ch” in English “church”, we write “tch”.
  • kh (noch / Buch): Start to make a “k”, but leave a small gap and let air flow through. Keep it gentle, at the back of your mouth.
  • oe (KOE-nuhn (können)): Say “eh”, hold your tongue there, and round your lips as if saying “oh”. Make one sound. For the longer sound in hören, start from a steady “ay” and round your lips.
  • ue (fuenf (fünf)): Say “ih” as in “sit”, hold your tongue there, and round your lips as if saying “oo”. For the longer sound in für or über, start from “ee”. Make one sound, without a “y” in front.

ee as in see; oo as in moon; u as in put; ih as in sit; eh as in bed; uh as the a in about; ah as when you open your mouth for the dentist. eye / ey as in eye, ow as in now, oy as in boy. Keep ay and oh steady, without the English glide at the end.

Keep uh endings light. In -uh (German -er), let the ending fade without adding an English r. ng is the end of sing, without an extra hard g; z is the start of zoo; ts is the end of cats.

These spellings help you get close to standard German. Some German sounds need the mouth tips above.
