Do I need to speak German?
No. You see everything they say translated into your language. You answer in your language, and you get the German sentence to read out, with pronunciation written in your own letters.
Does a computer voice speak for me?
Only if you want it to. You speak in your own voice. For a sentence that is hard to say, you can tap it and a machine voice says it into the call — you hear it too. That works only after the other person agreed; the first sentence you read tells them it may happen.
What does the other person know?
At the start you read one sentence: your German is not very good yet, and you ask if you may use an automatic translation on your screen. The translation starts only after they agree.
What do I need?
A phone or computer with a current browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox) and a microphone. Headphones help. There is nothing to install.
Which numbers can I call?
German landline and mobile numbers of businesses and offices — for example Jobcenter, Krankenkasse, Finanzamt, doctors, landlords. Not private people, and not expensive service numbers like 0900 or 0180.
Can they call me back?
Not on this call's number. The call runs over our line, and the other person sees a shared service number, not yours — a callback to it does not reach you. Tell them you will call again, or give them your own number.
What counts as call time?
The time from when the call is answered until you hang up — including phone menus, hold music and asking for permission. Ringing without an answer and busy lines use no call time.
Does it work on a smartphone?
Yes, in the browser — there is nothing to install. Keep the browser open and in front during the call. If the screen locks or you switch apps, the call may be ended so no more call time runs.

Is the call recorded?
No. There is no audio recording. The text of the conversation is shown to you during the call and deleted 10 minutes after it ends.
Can it read my letter?
Yes, if you want. Take a photo of the letter before the call: we find the phone number and your reference numbers, so they are on your screen when you are asked. The photo is not stored.
